Chapter 11

Alana

“What are you doing for Christmas?”

Alana looked up from her computer and over toward Gabby, who was leaning in her doorway. She looked back at her computer and checked the date. “Shit. Christmas is only two weeks away? I didn’t even realize that.” She shrugged. “I have no idea. I’ll have to talk to my dad. I guess I’ll just go to his house.”

Gabby pushed herself away from the doorway and walked over to sit on Alana’s bed, staring down at the comforter instead of looking at Alana when she spoke. “What if you two spent Christmas at my house? Well, my parents’ house. There’s plenty of space. It’s obviously up to you, but I figured it might be nice to spend the holiday somewhere else, you know, considering everything.”

Alana had to blink back her tears, but she wasn’t sure if it was more from the thought of spending her first Christmas without her mom or the fact that Gabby had realized that it would be hard. “Really? Are you sure parents would be okay with that? I wouldn’t want to intrude.”

Gabby looked up at Alana and smiled sweetly at her, and it made butterflies flutter through Alana’s stomach. “I know for a fact that they’d be okay with it, because I already asked them.”

“And you want us there too? You want me to spend Christmas with you?”

Gabby patted the spot next to her on the bed. When Alana followed her silent instructions and sat down, Gabby put an arm around her waist and leaned into her. “I wanna spend Christmas with you more than I want anything else in the world.”

Alana tried to stop the erratic beating of her heart, but it was no use. “You can’t say stuff like that.” She giggled in spite of her best efforts not to. She had it so bad for this woman.

“Why not? It’s the truth.”

Alana groaned. “Because it makes me fall for you even more, which is only going to make it harder when you leave me.” Even though she tried not to, Alana pouted her bottom lip. She hated being the pathetic, emotional pregnant woman, but she couldn’t help it.

Gabby put her hands on Alana’s cheeks and pulled their faces closer together. “Just for the record, I’m not leaving you. I’m following my next adventure.” She kissed Alana softly and ran a finger over her cheek. “It’s not going to be easy for me either, you know.”

This was all getting way too heavy for Alana. She needed to change the subject before she started to cry. She looked around the room and forced out a laugh. “You know why I forgot it was almost Christmas? You have literally no decorations.”

Gabby let out a wistful sigh. “I honestly haven’t decorated for a holiday since I lived at my parents’ house. I’ve never had anything permanent that felt worthy of decorating.”

“Can I make a crazy suggestion?”

Gabby laughed, and it was the most wonderful sound in the world. “I love crazy suggestions.”

“Let’s decorate for Christmas.
